I recently read that HGTV’s Design Star was cancelled. I’ll be honest, I thought it was cancelled a long time ago. In the beginning, I really tried to like this show, but it never lived up to what I was expecting I guess. If you aren’t familiar with it, it was a reality show with Vern Yip, Genevieve Gorder (from Trading Spaces) and some random other people as judges. Decorators both professional and non-professional came together to work on group and individual DIY home décor challenges and then presented their project as if they were an HGTV host. The end prize was the winner hosting their own show on HGTV in the future.
I was never a fan of the group challenges, as I didn’t really think you saw what every designer could do. There was always someone wacky, a la Hildi from Trading Spaces, who did some crazy thing in a room and then there would be someone stuck doing all the painting. I didn’t feel like it reflected everyone’s point of view. I did however like the individual challenges which usually consisted of decorating one room set up in a studio that was exactly the same for every designer. I think you really saw the creativeness and talent of each designer in those challenges. Some were ho-hum and some were really spectacular.
I also wasn’t a huge fan of the tv segment portion of the contest. Some people just aren’t comfortable in front of a camera and I was never quite sure why they signed up for this show if they weren’t! It also was somewhat easy to figure out who the front runners were based on the camera challenges. Obviously they were going to want a telegenic personality for a future show.
All in all, not terrible news to my DVR. How about you? Did you ever watch it?
