It’s a snowy weekend in Pittsburgh and we aren’t in the NFL Playoffs, so it’s Netflix and literally chill for me. I don’t think I’ve talked about any of my Netflix faves on the blog before, so thought it was high time I did. I tend to gravitate toward British crime dramas and my recommendations reflect that, though I did throw in an American movie. I have a couple series that I’ve started but not yet finished, so I didn’t include those here yet. I wanted to give them a good chance before weighing in. I also stuck to mainly Netflix originals versus network series you are probably already watching.
Bodyguard
British war veteran David Budd protects the politician who supported the conflict he fought in. I don’t want to give too much away about this series, because the tension is part of its appeal. Budd deals with his protection detail, his PTSD and his soon to be ex-wife exposing some of his personal demons under his steely exterior. I give this series a strong recommendation and Richard Madden recently won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of Budd.
Dumplin
Found this Netflix original movie by accident, but it was a good accident! Entertaining movie about a Texas teen grieving a loss by entering a beauty pageant run by her ex beauty queen mom. Soundtrack features Dolly Parton. I found this movie entertaining and easily watchable.
Collateral
This is a four episode series so not a huge time commitment. I watched this in stops and starts, so perhaps that influences my opinion of it, but I was kind of meh about it. I wanted to like it, but didn’t like it as much as I expected. It has a ton of interconnected story lines, but some didn’t really seem to go anywhere by the end of the series. I would say it is worth watching, but not a must see for me. Being only a four parter is a big upside for me just because you can finish it up rather quickly.
Doctor Foster
A doctor’s husband is having an affair, but why is everyone trying to convince her she’s crazy? Loved the first season of this show! The second season I didn’t love as much because it veered off into a weird storyline, but then finished very strong. If you haven’t watched this one yet, it’s a must see!
Hinterland
This is another British series, set in Wales. It’s a bit depressing, so not a good watch if you are feeling down. Super intense police detective solving murders in remote Welsh villages. Well acted and unusual, but definitely a downer.
Safe
Interesting series about a gated British community that holds many secrets. A daughter goes missing and her father begins searching and examining his neighbors. I liked this one, though the whole time I was thinking, why don’t they just track her cell. I give this one a thumbs up even if its only to see Dexter with a British accent.
Broadchurch
I watched this series awhile ago but it was great. It deals with the dark subject of a child murder and the grief, media attention and suspicion that occur as a result. Strongly recommend this one, well acted and keeps you interested.
What are you watching on Netflix? I’d love some recommendations. Derry Girls is next on my watch list and I’ve been saving the most recent The Crown for a sick day. Let me know what you are watching in the comments!
